Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal toward Spectators

The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

Jones additionally clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”

League Context for Proprietor Fines

This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
  • Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the fine manageable for the billionaire proprietor.

Recent Controversies and Media Attention

The incident follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who faced significant criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star defensive player Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that examined his role in developing the Dallas franchise into the globe’s highest-worth sports franchise, despite its modern-era championship drought.

The league’s action to penalize Jones underscores its ongoing initiative to maintain professional conduct among all franchise representatives, regardless of their position or financial standing.
